A Short Tale About A Saucer

D erbie the Derby saucer, was a saucy little saucer, he got up to all sort of things. In fact, up high on the shelf he had quite a reputation, so much to say that even Toni the toaster on the kitchen top had heard all about him, now not even Wedgie's reputation had made it that far!

He'd do anything, particularly if it meant he could bathe in the warm soapy water in Wilma the washing up bowl. Once he had even gone so far as to hide when on the kitchen table. Of course, they found him eventually, behind the Timmie the big old teapot who got all steamed up because of this excitement.

But, Derbie had one problem, only a few of his friends knew about this, he tried to keep it a secret. He was in actual fact CHIPPED, only a little chip you understand, it was on his bottom where he normally sat. However, when he got washed up he always jostled for the back place on the plate rack to hide his flaw.

He was actually a quiet sort of saucer, he let himself get sat on quite a lot, but he didn't mind when he could make up for it with a glorious night with Gertrude the grater.

Then one day the inevitable happened, he got found out, the chip was out. Derbie disappeared, days went by but still with not sign of him, Gertrudee went into mourning and Simone the Sieve got blocked up. Suddenly, one Monday morning Derbie reappeared amongst the washing up pile, he looked pale and blotchy. Simone, sitting near him, looked a little closer and discovered he'd been used as a paint palette, he - Derbie the Saucer had actually been degraded to a paint palette. Oh, the embarrassment!

Once he'd been washed and placed back on his shelf he turned to talk to Wedgie but found that all the other plates and saucers were crowded up at the other end of the shelf. All but Egbert the Eggcup, a slimy little guy who Derbie never talked to, but now, well he needed a friend so he talked to Egbert and found he was a real nice guy.

After a few days Derbie found that looks weren't everything but friends were really important so he was really happy, he could live with being a paint palette.
